Cardinal Priest of Ss Pietro e Paolo a Via Ostiense
Born on February 6, 1931, in Mogpoc, diocese of Boac, Philippines, Cardinal Vidal completed his early studies at the Minor Seminary of the Most Holy Rosary, now Our Lady of Carmel. He then attended the San Carlo Seminary in Manila, a school run by religious of the Congregation of the Immaculate Heart of Mary. Ordained a priest on March 17, 1956, he immediately became the spiritual director of the local Seminary of Mount Carmel. He was elected Bishop of the titular Church of Claterna on September 10, 1971, promoted to Lipa on August 22, 1973, and named Coadjutor of Cebu on April 13, 1981. On August 24, 1982, he was named Archbishop of Cebu. John Paul II elevated him to the College of Cardinals during the Consistory of May 25, 1985. Cardinal Vidal is held in high esteem for his spiritual gifts, his simple life style and his modesty. He helped found the Catechist Missionaries of St. Theresa, a religious order concerned with spiritual education.
