Born in Altötting, Germany on 23 May 1911, Cardinal Mayer was ordained for the Benedictines on 25 August 1935 at the age of 24. He was consecrated Bishop of the titular see of Satriano on 6 January 1972 and was Prefect of the Congregation for Divine Worship and also President of the Pontifical Commission "Ecclesia Dei".
