Born in Poppi, in the diocese of Fiesole, on August 23, 1915, Antonio Innocenti was ordained priest on July 17, 1938. Innocenti has carried out a great part of his vocation working in the diplomatic field and in the Vatican Curia, including the post of Apostolic Nuncio to Spain. He has worked in the Secretariat of State, and in the Congregations for the Doctrine of the Faith, for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments, for the Causes of the Saints, for Bishops, and for the Evangelization of Peoples. He was appointed to the titular Church of Eclano on December 15, 1967 with the title of Archbishop, and made a cardinal by John Paul II during the Consistory of May 25, 1985, who also chose him to be president of the Pontifical Commission Ecclesia Dei .
