Born in 1944 in Kenya (birthdate uncertain). He studies for the priesthood in Rome and was ordained by Pope Paul VI on 6 January 1973 in St Peter's Basilica.
Pope John Paul II appointed him as the first Bishop of Embu on 9 June 1986. He was consecrated on 20 September 1986 by Cardinal Tomko. He was later appointed as Coadjutor Archbishop of Nyeri on 23 January 2002, before Pope Benedict XVI appointed him as Archbishop of Nairobi on 6 October 2007. He was made a cardinal on 24 November 2007.
