Born on 12 February 1931. Ordained on 26 May 1956. Appointed as Auxiliary Bishop of Madrid-Alcalá on 20 March 1985 and consecrated on 11 May 1985 by Cardinal Suquía Goicoechea. He was promoted to Archbishop of Valencia on 24 July 1992 and hosted World Youth Day there in 2006.

Pope Benedict XVI made him a Cardinal on 24 November 2007.
