Cardinal Deacon of St John della Pigna
Cardinal Farina was born on 24 September 1933. He entered the Salesians at 16, and made his perpetual vows on 25 September 1954 at the age of 21.
He was ordained on 1 July 1958 by Cardinal Fossati, Archbishop of Turin and then undertook further studies, particularly in Church History. He held a number of academic and teaching positions at Salesian universities, including the position of Rector of the Pontifical Salesian University on a number of occasions.
He was Secretary of the Pontifical Committee of Historical Science for 10 years, from 1978 to 1988, and then Under-Secretary of the Pontifical Council for Culture. Pope John Paul II named him Prefect of the Apostolic Vatican Library on 25 May 1997.
He was raised to the dignity of the episopate, being consecrated on 16 December 2006 by Cardinal Bertone, Secretary of State, with the titular see of Oderzo. Pope Benedict XVI appointed him Archivist and Librarian of the Holy Roman Church on 25 June 2007, elevating him to the dignity of Archbishop. He was made a Cardinal on 24 November 2007.
