Cardinal Deacon of St Peter Damian ai Monti de San Paolo
Born on 17 April 1940, in Poli, Italy. He studied for the priesthood in Naples and at the Pontifical Lateran University (obtaining a doctorate in canon and civil law).
He was ordained to the priesthood on 19 July 1964 in Naples. He taught canon law, including at the Pontifical Lateran University, and was later appointed Rector of the Major Archdiocesan Seminary in Naples.
Pope John Paul II appointed him to be Auxiliary Bishop of Naples on 23 March 1989, and he was consecrated by Michael Cardinal Giordano in the Cathedral of Naples on 13 May 1989. He was transferred to be Bishop of the Suburbicarian See of Albano on 13 November 1999 and was named Prefect of the Supreme Tribunal of the Apostolic Signature with promotion to archbishop on 27 May 2004.
He was created a Cardinal by Pope Benedict XVI on 24 March 2006.
