Cardinal Deacon of St Mary of the Stairs
Cardinal Nagy was born in Wadowice (Poland) on 30 September 1921.
He entered the Dehonians in 1937 at the age of 16, and studied in Krakow and Lublin. He has a doctorate in moral theology and ecumenism.
He was ordained to the priesthood on 8 July 1945 in Krakow by Bishop Rospond, auxiliary Bishop of Krakow. He taught at the Catholic University of Lublin (at the same time as Fr Karol Wojtyla, later Pope John Paul II). He was a member of the International Theological Commission from 1986-1996, and has held various theological positions and published widely in Poland.
He was consecrated Archbishop of the titular see of Holar on 13 October 2003 by Cardinal Macharski, Archbishop of Krakow, and raised to the College of Cardinals on 21 October 2003 by Pope John Paul II.
