Cardinal Priest of St. Mary of Monserrat of the Spanish
Born on 23 August 1934 in Medina de Rioseca, in the Archdiocese of Valladolid, Spain. He studied medicine at the Medical Faculty of Vallodolid before leaving to join the Franciscans. He then studied philosophy in Rome and, later, psychology at the Central University of Madrid.
He was ordained a priest on 17 August 1960. He later became the Franciscan Provincial for the province of Santiago in 1970.
He was appointed Archbishop of Tanger (Morocco) on 17 December 1973 and was consecrated on 28 April 1974 by Cardinal Gonzalez Martin, Archbishop of Toledo.
He was transferred to be Metropolitan Archbishop of Seville on 22 May 1982.
In February 1995, he was awarded the Orden al M&0233;rito de los Padres de la Patria Dominicana, the highest decoration granted by the Domnican Republic, as well an honorary doctorate from the Technological University of Cibao, Dominican Republic. He was awarded the silver medal of the Republic of Panama in September 2000.
Pope John Paul II elevated him to the College of Cardinals on 21 October 2003, giving him the title of Santa Maria in Montserrato degli Spagnoli.
