Cardinal Tauran was born on 3 April 1943 in Bordeaux (France).

He studied at the Pontifical Gregorian University, the Catholic Institute in Toulouse and the Pontifical Ecclesiastical Academy in Rome. He speaks French, Spanish, English and Italian.

He was ordained on 20 September 1969 and undertook parish assignments in the Archdiocese of Bordeaux until 1975 when he entered the Diplomatic Service of the Holy See.

He served in the nunciature in the Dominican Republic, Lebanon, Haiti, Beirut and Damascus.

He was appointed Secretary of the Secretariat of State for the Relations with States on 1 December 1990 and consecrated an Archbishop of the titular see of Telepte on 6 January 1991 by Pope John Paul II in Rome.

He was elevated to the College of Cardinals on 21 October 2003 by Pope John Paul II.

On 24 November 2003 he was nominated Archivist and Librarian of the Holy Roman Church.
