Cardinal Agostino Cacciavillan was born on 14 August 1926 in Novale (Diocese of Vicenza, Italy).

He was ordained to the priesthood on 26 June 1949. He was made a prelate of honour on 26 August 1973.

He was elected as titular Archbishop of Amiterno and appointed pro-nuncio in Kenya on 17 January 1976, and was consecrated on 28 February 1976 in Vatican City by Cardinal Jean Villot. He was made pro-nuncio in India on 9 May 1981, then pro-nuncio in Nepal on 30 April 1985. From 1990 until 1998, he was pro-nuncio to the United States. On 11 November 1998, Pope John Paul II appointed him as President of the Administration of the Patrimony of the Holy See.

He retired on 1 October 2002.
