Cardinal Sanchez was born in Pandan, the Philippines, on March 17, 1920, and ordained on May 12, 1946. Named Bishop of Lesvi, he received his episcopal consecration on February 5, 1968. He served as the Coadjutor Bishop of Lucena from December 12, 1972, then as Bishop of Lucena from September 25, 1976. On January 12, 1982 he was promoted as Archbishop of Nueva Segovia, retiring in 1986, when he was made Secretary of the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples on October 30, 1985. Cardinal Sanchez has served in the Administrative Council of the Episcopal Conference of the Philippines since1970 and as President of the Episcopal Commission for the Apostolate of the Laity since 1976. He was made a cardinal during the Consistory of June 28, 1991, and also became, one month later, Prefect of the Congregation for the Clergy. Cardinal Sanchez retired from this position on June 15, 1996.
