Cardinal Scheffczyk was born in Beuthen, Germany, on 21 February 1920. He was ordained on 29 June 1947 in Freising. He did Pastoral work in Grafting and Traunwalchen before becoming professor of Dogmatic Theology at Philosophisch-Theologische Hochschule Königstein from 1957-1962, then at the University of Tübingen from 1962-1965, and then the University of Munich from 1962-1985. He died on 8 December 2005 (feast of the Immaculate Conception).
