Born in Capilla del Senor, in the Diocese of Zàrate-Campana, Argentina, on April 14, 1919. After attending the seminary in La Plata, in 1937 he moved to Rome where he graduated from the Gregorian University in Theology and Sacred Scripture. On October 25, 1942, he was ordained a priest in the Church of Il Gesu in Rome. In 1943 he taught Greek and Latin in the minor seminary in his native diocese. In 1945 he taught dogmatic theology and sacred scripture at the major seminary of San José de La Plata. He has been President of the Argentina Society of Sacred Scripture Professors, as well as Vice-Rector, General Prefect and Rector of the La Plata Seminary. On June 14, 1957, Pope Pius XII nominated him titular Bishop of Tanais. He was transferred to San Rafael on June 12, 1961, and promoted to Archbishop of Còrdoba on February 16, 1965. He was made a cardinal by Pope Paul VI during the Consistory of March 5, 1973.
