Cardinal Priest of S Girolamo della Carità
Born in Piobbico, in central Italy, on May 19, 1912, Palazzini attended
the regional seminary at Fano. From 1928 to 1932 he studied Theology and Law at
the Lateran. He was ordained a priest on December 6, 1934. In 1937 he received a
degree in Theology. In 1958, Palazzini was named Secretary of the Holy
Congregation of the Council (today for the clergy). In 1959, he was named
Consultor for the Commission for the Authentic Interpretation of the Code of
Canon Law. In 1961 he was named Consultor for the Holy Office. On August 28,
1962, John XXIII appointed him Bishop of the titular Church of Cesarea in
Cappadocia. A scholar, Palazzini published numerous works. He wrote for the
Osservatore Romano, and was an editor of the magazine Studi Cattolici from its
founding until 1958. He was elevated to the cardinalate by Paul VI during the
Consistory of March 5, 1973 and was during the 1980s Prefect of the Congregation
for the Causes of the Saints.
