Born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, on 15 January, 1920, O’Connor was ordained on 15 December, 1945. After teaching at the St. James School and Virginia State University in Petersburg, he served as a chaplain in the U.S. Army and Navy following the troops overseas in 1943. He was nominated Head Chaplain and filled this position until retirement in 1979 as a Rear Admiral. During his military experience, he received numerous honours and decorations, one of which was awarded for Valour. On 18 April, 1979, he was nominated Bishop of the titular Church of Curzola and Archbishop of New York on 26 January 1984. He was made Cardinal by John Paul II during the Consistory of 25 May, 1985. Cardinal O’Connor is an eminent intellectual and author of many publications. He is a member of various congregations and pontifical councils. He also participated in the Cardinals’ Supervisory for the religious institutions.
