Cardinal Nguyên van Thuân was born in Hue (Vietnam) on 17 April 1928. He was ordained on 11 June 1953. He was appointed Bishop of Nha Trang on 13 April 1967 and was consecrated on 24 June 1967 by Archbishop Angelo Palmas, Apostolic Delegate in Viet Nam. he was made Coadjutor of Thanh-Pho Ho Chi Minh on 24 April 1975. He was gaoled by the Communist regime from 1975-1988, nine years of which he spent in solitary confinement. He resigned the coadjutorship on 24 November 1994. He was appointed Secretary of the Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace, and then made President on 24 June 1998.
