Born in Estrela, in the Archdiocese of Porto Alegre, Brazil, on October 8,
1924. His parents, Joseph and Veronica, were of German origin. Lorscheider
entered the Franciscan minor seminary of Taquari at the age of nine. On December
1, 1942, he began his novitiate. He took solemn vows on August 22, 1946, and, on
August 22, 1948, was ordained. After teaching Latin, German and Mathematics at
the minor seminary of Taquari, he was sent to Rome to study Dogmatic Theology at
the Antonianum, graduating in 1952. He then returned to Brazil to teach Dogmatic
Theology at the Franciscan seminary of Divinopolis. In 1958 his superiors called
him back to Rome to teach at the Antonianum. He remained until 1962 when, on
February 3, he was appointed Bishop of Santo Angelo by Pope John XXIII. Pope
Paul VI named him Archbishop of Fortaleza on March 26, 1973 and elevated him to
cardinalate during the Consistory of May 24, 1976. He has been Secretary and
President of the Brazilian bishops' conference. He was also President of
Caritas International. On July 12, 1995, he was transferred to Aparecida.
