Cardinal Hamao was born in Tokyo (Japan) on 9 March 1930.
He
studied in Tokyo and Rome (Pontifical Urbanian Univerisity) and was ordained in
Rome on 21 December 1957.
He then returned to Tokyo and held positions
including secretary to the Cardinal Archbishop, secretary of the archdiocesan
liturgical commission and parish priest of the Cathedral.
He was
appointed titular bishop of Oreto on 5 February 1970 and consecrated by
Archbishop Wustenburg (pro-nuncio in Japan) on 29 April 1970. He was transferred
to be bishop of Yokohama on 30 October 1979. He resigned from the governance of
the diocese on 15 June 1998 when he was made President of the Pontifical Council
for the Pastoral Care of Migrants and Itinerant People. He was promoted to
Archbishop.
Pope John Paul II elevated him to the College of Cardinals on
21 October 2003, giving him the deaconry of St John Bosco in via Tuscolana.
