Fourth of five children, he was born in Santiago del Chile on July 26, 1914. He first studied at the seminary of his native city, then at the Gregorian University, where he obtained his B.A. in Canon Law. Ordained a priest on December 18, 1937, he immediately became the spiritual director and vice-rector of the Minor Seminary of the Santiago del Chile archdiocese. He was named Bishop of Copiapò by Pope Pius XII on June 15, 1958. He participated at Vatican II and has been President of the Vocations Department of the Latin America Episcopal Conference. He has also been President of Episcopal Committee for the Latin American Pius College in Rome. Pope Paul VI promoted him to La Serena on July 28, 1967, and he was transferred to Santiago of Chile on May 3, 1983. Pope John Paul II made him a cardinal during the Consistory of May 25, 1985. He retired from his position as Archbishop of Santiago of Chile on March 30, 1990.
