Born in Segni, near Rome, on February 5, 1918, Fagiolo was ordained on March 6, 1943. The Cardinal is considered one of the Church's greatest experts on Canon Law. In addition to his degrees in Sacred Scripture and Canon Law, which he received from the Lateran, he earned his teaching degree in Ecclesiastical and Canon Law at the Rome's "Sapienza" University and at the "Gabriele D'Annunzio" University in the Abruzzi. He later taught Contract Law in Rome. Between 1979 and 1984, Fagiolo worked as Vice-President of the Italian Episcopal Conference and President of the Italian "Caritas." His Curial responsibilities have been extensive, especially during his term as President of the Pontifical Council for the Interpretation of Legislative Texts. He has been President of the Disciplinary Committee for the Roman Curia since 1990, and was elevated to the College of Cardinals by John Paul II during the Consistory of November 26, 1994.
