Born in Laruns, France, on June 4, 1934, Cardinal Eyt entered the Seminary of Bayonne in 1954. He was ordained on June 29, 1961, and subsequently received his doctorate in Theology from the Gregorian Pontifical University. He then served as a lecturer, professor, vice-rector, and rector at the Catholic Institute of Toulouse between 1967 and 1972. In 1980, he became a member of the International Theological Commission, and in 1982 he was elected President of the Catholic Institutes for Higher Education in France. Named Coadjutor Bishop of Bordeaux on June 7, 1986, in 1987 he became Special Secretary of the Seventh General Assembly of the Bishops' Synod in Rome. He was made Archbishop of Bordeaux on May 31, 1989. He has published various books, including the 1985 Comment on the Creed. During the Consistory of November 26, 1994, John Paul II elevated him to the College of Cardinals.
