Born in Acerra, near Naples, on October 1, 1908. The bishop of Naples sent him to study at the Pontifical Theological Faculty of Southern Italy. He was ordained a priest on December 21, 1930. He remained in southern Italy for six years carrying out various pastoral activities. A renowned jurist, Casoria was a peritus at the Second Vatican Council. At the conclusion of the Council, Paul VI named him Secretary of the Congregation for the Sacraments, then appointed him titular Archbishop of Vescovio on January 6, 1972. On September 24, 1973, Casoria became Secretary of the Congregation for the Causes of the Saints, a position he held for eight years. He was made Pro-Prefect of the Congregation for the Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments in August 1981, and was promoted to Prefect in 1983, where he served for two years. John Paul II elevated Casoria to the College of Cardinals at the Consistory of February 2, 1983.
