Born in Reducci˛n, in the Diocese of Rýo Cuarto, Argentina, on February 11, 1912, Cardinal Aramburu began his ecclesiastical studies at the Seminary of Cordoba. He was sent to Rome, ordained a priest on October 28, 1934, and later received a degree in canon law and moral theology. He returned to his native country and began teaching at the seminary of Cordoba, where he was chosen Vice-Rector. He also served on the literature and philosophy faculties of the national University. Pope Pius XII appointed him titular Bishop of Paltea on October 7, 1946. He was then transferred to TucumÓn and later to Torri of Bizacena, where on June 14, 1967, he was given the title of Archbishop pro illa vice. On April 22, 1975, he was called to lead the Diocese of Buenos Aires, where he concentrated on vocations and social work, until July 10, 1990. He has also held the position of Ordinary for the Oriental-Rite Faithful in Argentina. He was made a cardinal by Pope Paul VI during the Consistory of May 24, 1976.
